Abbey Road on the River

If you're a fan of the Beatles, make sure you head downtown this weekend to check out the highly-anticipated Abbey Road on the River concert series. This concert series has gained popularity over the years, starting in Louisville over Memorial Day weekend and ending in Washington D.C. over Labor Day weekend. In addition, this year fans can look forward to a free concert this coming Friday!
Fourth Street Live is being blocked off for the initial concert to kick off Beatlemania and will feature performers such as Canada's Hal Bruce, England's Meet the Beatles and Italy's The Brothel Creepers. The free concert begins at 11:45 a.m. and ends at 2:00 p.m.. This is just the start of the weekend though! The concert series continues all weekend, through Monday, and features first year guests such as Jefferson Starship, as well as veterans like All You Need Is Love. This should be a great event that honors the music and spirit of The Beatles!

Celebrate Louisville by Participating in the Hometown Tourist Celebration

Even though Derby is over, locals still have a lot to look forward to! All throughout the month of May, the city has been encouraging local Kentucky and Indiana residents to become tourists in their own hometown as part of the Hometown Tourist Celebration. This is a perfect opportunity for residents who still haven't had the chance to see the quintessential Louisville attractions, such as plays at Actor's Theatre and the Frazier Arms Museum.

Locals can look forward to 2-for-1 discounts at over 42 area attractions, a dozen restaurants, and 10 hotels. In addition, there are half a dozen events that are free to the public. One of these events is being extended all the way through October and is called PossibiliTours Walking Tours. The walking tour is held on Friday and Sundays at 10:30 and Saturdays at 2:00, featuring a local volunteer leading you on a free, one hour tour exploring downtown Louisville.
This month long event is being held in conjunction with the Travel Industry Association's Annual National Tourism Week and offers are valid for anyone with a Kentucky or Indiana ID, local college ID, or military ID.

The Fourth Annual Buy Local First Fair

Most people who've been around Louisville for any period of time have probably seen the local saying on a bumper sticker or billboard, "Keep Louisville Weird". This adage was developed as the Buy Local movement began moving into Louisville, encouraging residents and visitors alike to shop locally to help boost the local economy. The Fourth Annual Buy Local First Fair is being hosted by the Louisville Independent Business Alliance, the Louisville Visual Arts Association and Grasshoppers Distribution at The Watertower on River Road.

This unique event is a celebration of locally owned and operated businesses such as restaurants, boutiques, breweries, galleries and much more. The feel of the fair will be similar to a farmer's market, with booths that display local art, handmade treasures, and a variety of different foods! In addition, there will also be live music, a "Top Chef" competition, a kids' area, craft beer and raffle.

The City of Middletown

The Middletown Neighborhood lies in Eastern Jefferson county and operates as an independent city from Lousville. Many families decide that Middletown is a great place to live and therefore several neighborhoods have been developed with family living in mind.
The City of Middletown began as an early Kentucky settlement that was initially owned by a Revolutionary War veteran named Jacob Myers. An early map of, what it was known as at the time, Middle-town was only two and a half blocks wide and two blocks long. One claim on where Middletown's name derives from is that it is near the halfway point between Louisville and Shelbyville.
Today, several of the structures in Middletown are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, there are also two designated Historic Districts containing over one hundred properties each.

Cherokee Park and Seneca Park in Louisville, Kentucky

A few local restaurants in Louisville celebrate Monday Fund Days. People write in about needs or causes that could use support, management decides on one or several, and on a following Monday, all proceeds from that day go toward that cause.

I had the pleasure of working at one of the restaurants the day our fund was Save Hogan's Fountain TeePee Pavilion. It was an honor to donate money to something that I see every time I visit Cherokee Park and something I visualize every time I picture the park. Constructed in 1964, the pavilion has been around longer than I've been alive. However, as a resident of Louisville and a frequent visitor of the park, it is a place I've come to appreciate and look to as a common ground, a place I would meet friends before exploring the park, a place I would look to have family and friends gather; a place unlike anywhere else in Louisville.

Cherokee Park was originally designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1891. For more than 100 years, it has been a place where people can take in the scenery, see the large Victorian homes that surround the park, and keep active. The Scenic Loop extends for 2.4 miles allowing people to walk, run, play with their pets, or simply stop at a bench and people watch.

Seneca Park, the last to be designed by the Olmstead firm, is located between St. Matthews and the Highlands. Although Seneca is roughly 100 acres smaller than Cherokee, it stays just as busy if not more so, especially with the states 6th rated toughest golf course nearby.

Between the two parks, families and friends can participate in a variety of sports including, volleyball, tennis, baseball, basketball, and soccer. There are also playgrounds, tables for picnics or family reunions, and walking paths or trails for cross country and hiking. Either park you go decide to go to, you won't be disappointed!
